Available
for our students' use is our very own Snoezelen® room. Students
are encouraged to explore their senses and surroundings by manipulating
this multi-sensory environment to create either a relaxing or stimulating
visual, auditory, tactile and olfactory experience.
The
word "snoezelen" comes from blending two Dutch words for "sniff"
and "doze". Jan Julsegge and Ad Verheul from the Netherlands created
the first Snoezelen® in 1975.
A
Snoezelen® room is a multi-sensory stimulating environment specifically
designed for individuals with severe sensory impairment or multiple
disabilities. Typically one part of the room is designated for relaxation
and another part for activity. A variety of lighting effects, shapes,
textures, aromas, soft music and colors are strategically placed
around the room to stimulate the senses.
The
word SnoezelenŽ is a trademark of ROMPAŽ, which describes a multi-sensory
environment. More information on SnoezelenŽ and ROMPAŽ is available
at http://www.rompa.com .
